Some major changes are going on in our house! Brett and I, along with one of our best friend couples, has started The Daniel Plan. What’s The Daniel Plan, you ask? It’s a book written by Rick Warren, Daniel Amen, and Mark Hyman about having a healthy lifestyle. It focuses on 5 F’s…Faith, Focus, Food, Fitness, and Friends.
So far, we’ve learned a lot about what we should and shouldn’t eat and how to make changes to our eating habits. They also really encourages doing it with friends because doing it alone is hard. It builds community and accountability.
As of today, we’re on Day 3 of a 10 day detox. No sugar, no gluten, no dairy, no caffeine, no artificial sweetener. It’s been tough. We haven’t liked everything we’ve eaten so far and I’m horrible at finishing a plate when I don’t enjoy it! Don’t get me wrong, we’ve liked some things and there are more meals on the detox plan that seem like they’ll be yummy. I feel hungry constantly. I’m peeing all the time due to the amount of water I’m drinking!
On the plus side, I had my last Coke on Jan 1st, so I’m 12 days free of it! That’s a big victory for me! whoo hoo!! And through it all, I’m making healthy changes and that’s what is most important. There is no way I can do this on my own. It takes constant prayer. When I find myself being grumpy or hungry or don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food, I have to stop and pray and ask for God’s help through it. Or else, it consumes me. I didn’t realize how much food controlled me and much I craved horrible things.
Lysa TerKuerst says it best:
“God made us capable of craving so we’d have an unquenchable desire for more of Him, and Him alone. Nothing changes until we make the choice to redirect our misguided cravings to the only one capable of satisfying them. Getting healthy isn’t just about losing weight. It’s not limited to adjusting our diet and hoping for good physical results. It’s about recalibrating our souls so that we want to change — spiritually, physically, and mentally. And the battle really is in all three areas.” ~ from my book, “Made to Crave”
So, 2014 is off to the right start!
