We are venturing into something new around here! We started a garden! Since we have made changes to our diet and eating habits, we decided to grow our own veggies in the back yard. Brett has always wanted a garden, but I’ve never been too excited about all the work. However, this year it is exciting! We bought a variety of seeds…which may have been a bad decision since we don’t know what were doing! But if it goes well, then we’ll have all kinds of fresh goodness!
I enjoyed learning before we planted! I didn’t know this, but some vegetables are more compatible than others! I found the Companion Planting chart on Pinterest and made a grid to size of our garden based on what grows well near each other.
Maddie the Intern and Jonathan came out to help us get started. I don’t think they knew what they were getting into!
The dirt in our neighborhood is clay and it’s difficult to grow anything in it. So we decided to go for a raised bed. We had some left over wood (stained even!) from building our farm house kitchen table so Brett built a frame with it. We marked off the size we wanted it to be with string and began cutting out the grass within the square.
Raleigh enjoyed playing outside all day!
We decided to transplant the grass we dug up to the front yard where it’s kind of sparse. Brett had to teach Maddie how to use the mower and we hauled it up front in loads.
The finished product…well without the seeds! A cold front was coming in so we decided to wait to plant!
He was a tired boy by the end!
A week later, we planted! Our favorite little girl, Ellie, came to help! What a fun time to teach her about planting seeds and watching things grow!
She loved putting the seeds in the holes! Every time she dropped some in, she said, “I eat! I eat!” We hope she understands it will be a while before they’re ready to eat! LOL!
Then she got bored and ran around the yard!
Look at that dirty little face!
She was a great helper!
We have some spouts so stay tuned as we watch things grow!
